Not Just for Bison: Explore the Foothills of Šumava
“The white man” brought them to the brink of extinction, but it was also him who saved them for the future.
Few animal species have a history as dramatic—and as instructive—as the bison. Driven nearly to extinction by human hands, it was also the will and understanding of responsible people that brought the bison back. The bison is a prime example of what can be achieved in nature conservation when there is determination and care.
Set off on a journey to discover European bison, American bison, and aurochs in Křišťanov, and be captivated by the majesty of these herbivores. Over the last several millennia, humans domesticated aurochs—now extinct in the wild—who became the ancestors of all modern cattle breeds.
The Agrokomplex Šumava group began breeding a back-bred version of the aurochs (a so-called “replacement aurochs”) in 2008 at its Křišťanov cattle farm. The goal of the breeding program is to further refine and stabilize this unique cattle lineage.
The 20-hectare enclosure, made up of pastures and naturally regenerating forest, is located near the village of Křišťanov, on the edge of the Boletice military area. Visitors can enjoy an informative panel and a viewing tower, offering excellent opportunities to observe these impressive animals in their natural setting.
Meat from the herd is processed at the farm’s own facility and can also be tasted at a restaurant in nearby Prachatice.
