Borovany – A place to inspire you
You can find inspiration in history, handicrafts, farm management and current social issues. All of this you can find in the town of Borovany.
The most dominant and unmissable feature of the square in Borovany is the Augustinian Monastery, which is open to the public all year round (in accordance with the opening hours of the Information centre). Visitors have the opportunity to walk peacefully through the monastery and past original statues from the Římov Passion Route. You can see the Škapulíř Chapel, visit the lapidary of Baroque statues in the Gothic cloister, or learn about the history of pilgrimage in the region. During the summer season, from May to September, guided tours are prepared with the intriguing name: Tours of the Six Senses.
In the area of the monastery there is also Nazareth Studio, which offers creative activities for children and adults. Here you can paint your own ceramics, make jewellery, draw a picture or learn to work with sheep wool.
Activities that are a little different can be done in Borovanský mill. Here you can try the job of a farm worker, fish with the Kebule water goblin, or meet the miller’s black horse. After prior arrangement, visitors have the opportunity to see a family organic farm that breeds horses, sheep, goats, cows, pigs and poultry, or they can buy goat’s milk and dairy products.
The educational nature trail (TOTALITY DIVIDES – DEMOCRACY CONNECTS) also offers inspiration. It is 7.5 kilometres long and contains nine information panels. These panels acquaint visitors with the trail, and with the good neighbourly relations between Borovany and the northern region of Austria during and before the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as the deterioration of this relationship after Hitler came to power. It also tells the history of Borovany during World War II, the end of the war, and the construction of the Iron Curtain under the communist regime. The educational nature trail is signalled by a green tourist mark.
