The Lipno region – Where history is felt in every corner
The highest located castle in Bohemia, the ruins of Vítkův Hrádek (1053 m above sea level), offer wonderful views of the Šumava Mountains, Lipno, the Novohradské Mountains and, in good weather, also the Austrian Alps. No wonder the castle has been a romantic source of inspiration for various painters and writers – such as Adolf Heyduk and Adalbert Stifter. It is also interesting that the Czech King Wenceslas IV was imprisoned here.
The Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod is one of the most beautiful and authentic preserved monasteries in the Czech lands. It was founded in 1259 by the Rosenbergs and its construction lasted 100 years. It is the only operating Cistercian male monastery in the Czech Republic. The most valuable sights are the Madonna of Vyšší Brod and the Záviš Cross.
The most breathtaking view of the Vltava River is from Rožmberk Castle. The castle originated in the middle of the 13th century and belongs to the oldest castles of the Vítek family (the predecessors of the famous Rosenberg family). The town of Rožmberk nad Vltavou is rightly called ‘a pearl on the Vltava river’. In the town of Rožmberk the historical spirit can be felt in every corner.
The Schwarzenberg Canal is also a valuable historical monument. It was built more than 200 years ago to float timber from the forests below the mountains of Dreisessel, Plechý, Smrčina, Sulzberg and Bärenstein to the imperial capital of Vienna. The Schwarzenberg Canal connects the Světlá voda river, which is a tributary of the Cold Vltava river, and the Austrian Große Mühl river, which is a tributary of the Danube River. This way the Schwarzenberg Canal links the North Sea and the Black Sea. The total length of the canal is almost 52 km, of which 44 km is in the Vltava basin. Near the settlement of Jelení vrchy, it leads through a tunnel that is almost 400 m long.
