Žofín Primeval Forest – A Place Free from Human Interference
Discover the history of the Žofín Primeval Forest, a national nature reserve in the Novohradské Mountains, founded in 1838 by Count Georg Franz August Buquoy. As one of the oldest nature reserves in mainland Europe, the forest will celebrate an impressive 185 years of existence this year, on August 28.
Since 1991, the forest has been fenced off and closed to the public. The only exception is organized guided tours, which offer expert yet accessible commentary. During a 1.5-hour walk through the forest, you’ll encounter trees that began growing during the time of the Hussite Wars and experience the unique atmosphere of a place where nature thrives without human intervention.
The reserve spans 102 hectares, and some of the oldest trees are up to 400 years old. Since the mid-18th century, most of the area has developed naturally, untouched by human hands. The forest is primarily composed of beech trees, with smaller numbers of spruce and fir.
