More than just bison in the Sumava foothills
Non-binding inquiryFew animal species have had such a turbulent history that serves as both a warning and a lesson as the bison. The “white man” brought it to the brink of extinction, but it was also he who saved it for the future. The bison is a prime example of what the understanding and will of responsible people can achieve in nature conservation.
Discover European bison, American bison, and aurochs in Křišťanov and let yourself be truly captivated by the beauty of these herbivores. Over the last few millennia, humans domesticated the aurochs, and it became the ancestor of all modern cattle breeds.
The Agrokomplex Šumava group began breeding back-bred aurochs, known as “surrogate aurochs,” in 2008 at the Křišťanov cattle farm. The goal of the breeding program is to contribute to the further refinement and stabilization of this unique cattle breed.
The twenty-hectare enclosure, consisting half of pastures and the rest covered with successional woody plants, is located near the village of Křišťanov on the border of the Boletice military area. In addition to an information panel, it features a lookout tower on the edge for observing these impressive animals.
Meat from the farm is processed in their own slaughterhouse and you can also taste it in a restaurant in Prachatice.
